What Placemark stores, and who can see it · Last updated 20 August 2026

The short version

Placemark stores the business records you enter and the account you enter them under. It doesn't sell them, doesn't show advertising, and doesn't use your records to train anything. You can export everything at any time, and deleting your account deletes them.

What we store

  • The records you enter. Business names, addresses, phone numbers, descriptions, categories, opening hours, licence numbers, links to directory listings and social profiles, and the backlinks you track.
  • Your account. Email address, and a password hash if you use one. If you sign in with Google we receive your email address and name from Google; we never see your Google password.
  • Billing. Handled entirely by Stripe. We store a Stripe customer reference and which plan you're on. We never see or store card details.
  • Usage counts. How many messages you've sent Rel this month, so the plan limit can be enforced.

There is no analytics script, no advertising pixel, and no third-party tracker on this site. The only cookies are the ones that keep you signed in.

Records about other people's businesses

This matters more here than in most tools. If you're an agency, the records you enter describe your clients — businesses that never signed up for Placemark and never agreed to anything with us.

Nearly all of it is information those businesses publish deliberately: the name, address and phone number they want customers to find. But you're the one deciding what goes in, and you are responsible for having the right to enter it. If a client asks you to remove their record, do it, or ask us and we will.

Please don't put anything genuinely private in a Placemark record. It isn't the right place for personal data about individuals, contract terms, or anything a client wouldn't expect to see on a directory listing.

Who else touches it

  • Supabase — the database your records live in. United States.
  • Netlify — hosting and the functions that run scans and verification.
  • Anthropic — Rel and the scans. See below.
  • Stripe — payments. They hold the card, we don't.

Your data is stored in the United States. If you're in the EU or UK, entering it means accepting that.

What Rel sends, and what it doesn't

When you use Rel or run a scan, the record for that one business is sent to Anthropic's API along with your question, so the answer can be about the right business. Your other clients' records are not sent. Your email address, your account and your billing details are not sent.

Anthropic does not train on data submitted through their API. We don't train anything on your records either — we have no model to train.

Scans and link verification also fetch public web pages, identifying themselves honestly as an automated request from Placemark.

Getting it back, and getting rid of it

  • Export — one button, in the app, any time. You get every record as a JSON file with nothing held back.
  • Cancel — your records stay exactly as they are. You simply can't add past the free limit until you subscribe again. Nothing is deleted for not paying.
  • Delete — email us and we'll delete your account and everything in it within 30 days. Backups age out within a further 30. Stripe keeps payment records for as long as the law requires, which is out of our hands.

Security, honestly stated

Every record is protected at the database level so that only your account can read it — not just in the application, but in the database itself. Traffic is encrypted. Card details never reach our servers.

Placemark is a small operation, not a company with a security team. We've built it carefully and we won't claim more than that. If you find a problem, please tell us at hello@placemark.me and we'll fix it.

Children

Placemark is a business tool and isn't intended for anyone under 18. We don't knowingly collect anything from children.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects you, we'll email you before it takes effect. The date at the top always tells you the current version.
